Rich Barton: An Entrepreneur’s Laws of the Web

Rich Barton has built several startups like Expedia and Zillow.com, but what’s his secret to success?
Speaking from his entrepreneur and venture capitalist perspective, Barton discussed his philosophy, lessons learned, venture capitalist experience, owning consumer-driven dot coms and social networking at a recent guest lecture at the University of Washington Foster School of Business. Below are his three laws:
- If it can be known, it will be known.
- If it can be rated, it will be rated.
- If it can be free, it will be free.
“People want control. People are revolutionaries at heart,” said Barton. During the lecture, Barton’s theories apply to consumer Internet startups. Barton is executive chairman of Zillow, chairman of Glassdoor, chairman of new venture Travelpost, board member of Realself and involved with numerous other start-ups such as King of the Web.
