Smart Lemming Diary: First Conference Call

New Boss Checks In

I have my first work call this morning with Tom. He called me on Friday to check in, since we hadn’t talked in a week. I was at Home Depot buying a 4-in-1 ladder, as I was talking him. “I’ve thought about you all, kind of like how we think of our mothers, knowing that we should call them!” Tom told me.

Tom is authentic, caring, and kind. I always seem to enjoy my discussions with him. I’m impressed with what I’ve heard and seen so far. He also continues to make good strides with his company. He finalized closing on the funding, his demo to a key prospect went great, and many other good things happening for him and the company.

Conference Call with Key VAR

Tom mentioned he had a call with the VP of Sales of the VAR he’s working with, so I offered to sit on the call so I could jump start my work with him. After learning I would be happy to sit in on the call, Tom jumped all over arranging the logistics, so I could be in my home office. “I’ve told the VP of Sales of the VAR all about you. She thinks you walk on water and will be happy to finally meet you,” he said. It was a great way to end my workweek. First, hearing that he thinks so highly of me. Second, that I feel I made an excellent choice in joining his company. I have a good feeling about this.

I have to say, it was a little weird, but definitely cool to be introduced as Director of Marketing in my first work call today. I’m a late bloomer. I didn’t really start my marketing career until after I got my Master’s degree. With the Internet boom, the recession, fourteen months of unemployment during the recession, it’s taken me nine years to achieve this title and level of responsibility. It appears I finally got in at the right time, in the right size company finally after five years of managing my career for upper management. My call on Monday was fun, given this background on my career. I know that I’ll never have the political capital that I have right now, right out of the gate, in my new job so I have to hit the ground running.

The Smart Lemming Diary is a series that chronicles a journey of laid-off worker, who becomes a Vice President of Sales Operations & Marketing for a small entrepreneurial healthcare technology company.
