Poaching: Collecting Your Favorites

Today was a good day, despite some annoying things like getting stuck in traffic, almost losing my Outlook .pst file, and wasn’t productive to my liking. Our HR consultant did contact my former coworker. Much to my surprise, he told the HR consultant that he’s ready to move into the city and ready for a change. He’s sending his resume to us tomorrow.

The HR consultant didn’t tell my former colleague that the position was reporting into me, but he did mention that I worked here and that Amanda worked here. Tom came into my office just before the news from the HR consultant, wanting me to call my former coworker, personally trying to recruit him. It looks good either way. I did follow-up; it was the first time we’ve talked since March or April 2005. He couldn’t believe that Amanda and I would be so supportive in trying to recruit him. Fortunate for him, Tom is enjoying collecting Amanda’s “favorites” from our previous employer.

Tradeshow Details: Trying not to Freak Out

Amanda came in my office first thing to discuss the tradeshow we have to go to in September. All of the details and changes she would like to see almost overwhelmed me. Thank goodness, she decided to take the lead in getting a hold of the local vendor that we work with regarding our booth. We have time to order two new banner stands, since she would prefer not to use the old booth for the 10 x 10 space. He’s sending me the information, so we can price and make some decisions. I have to admit, I needed my former colleague yesterday to help me with tradeshows. I just found out we have another one in November in Vegas too. Despite feeling a little overwhelmed, I didn’t let it show.

Finally, Something Familiar

After my mild freak-out in the morning, I was able to get back into my comfort zone with some revisions that Tom wanted me to make in his documents for the Sales & Marketing Plan for our channel partner. The CTO had multiple edits; Amanda opted out, but gave me some existing documents to pull information from. I was able to improve the three documents, creating a solid revised version to review with Tom tomorrow. I hit my first hard deadline with him, getting the changes done by 5:00 pm. He scanned the hard copies and loved them…whew.

Carving Out Thinking at Home: Job Transition

I still have to put together 100-Day plan that’s due next Friday on the 12th. I’m uncomfortable that I haven’t spent any time on the weekend to reflect about my job transition. This week has gone by so quickly.

The Smart Lemming Diary is a series that chronicles a journey of laid-off worker, who becomes a Vice President of Sales Operations & Marketing for a small entrepreneurial healthcare technology company.
