How to be Stealth like a Ninja Monkey during a Job Search
We’ve all done it. We’ve looked for another job while still employed at our current company.
During this recession, workers are keeping one eye on the job market and the other eye on job security. It’s like playing a game of chicken.
I have friends, who are trying to figure out, “When do I start looking for another job because I might get laid off? If I’m lucky enough to get another job in a new company, will I get laid off there because I’m the low man on the totem pole?” My friends don’t know whether to keep driving forward or when to turn off the road.
Clueless in the 90s
If you’ve decided to search for another job, while still employed, then check out, “How to Minimize Chances The Boss Will Learn You Are Looking” by Dana Mattioli. I laughed, as I read it, thinking, “Who would be stupid enough to post on a job board and not protect their identity?” Then I remembered, “Me!”
Back when I was job hunting in the late 90s, I forgot to block certain companies from viewing my resume. I don’t even remember job boards having the ability to block back then. That’s how clueless I was about using online job boards. I cringe just thinking about it.
Cover Your Bases
If you’re job hunting right now or planning to, then don’t forget to cover your bases. When posting on job boards, it’s easy to forget that your employer may be trolling around the same ones. What could happen if your boss finds out? The possibilities are endless, so be careful by choosing job boards that give you options to protect your privacy.
The following job boards have features that protect you during your job search: Monster.com’s “privacy plus,” Hotjobs.com’s “hot block,” and TheLadders.com’s “bio confidentiality.” Remember, your company may be using a recruiter. These features may not prevent recruiters from viewing your resume. So be wary.
Six Tips on Conducting a Job Search
Here are six common sense details to remember:
- Clothes: never wear interview clothes at work (especially if your company is business casual).
- Faxing or printing resumes and cover letters: never fax or print your resumes at work.
- Work email or work telephones: never email or use the work phone for job search calls.
- Web surfing activities: never use your computer to search job boards.
- Blind ads: be careful when you see a blind ad that doesn’t name the company, since it could be your company.
- Interviewing: take a personal day for interviews rather than doing it during “lunch” or an “appointment.” We all know interviews take longer than one hour.
Moral of the story? Be stealth like a ninja monkey, as you search for your new job.
