How to Manage Your Career Like Madonna, Martha, and Oprah

Submitted by Lori Grant on June 11, 2009 – 11:08 amNo Comment

madonna-in-business-suitWhat do Madonna, Martha and Oprah all have in common? They are masters at managing their career, all are true to their authentic selves.

The article, “Career Lessons from Celebrity Women What You Can Learn from Madonna, Martha and Oprah” by Susan Aaron discusses how women in business can learn career management lessons from these celebrities:

Madonna, Mistress of Reinvention

According to Joanne Meehl, president of Meehl & Balzotti Career Services, “She is a model for us to refresh ourselves.” Meehl also tells clients to seek new knowledge and experiences in order to stay current and sell themselves to employers.

“So many people wait to be anointed with knowledge.”

(As a reminder of how far Madonna has come since the 80s, watch the “We Look at Madonna’s Career as She Turns 50″ video above or click here.)

Martha Stewart, Domestic Mogul with Moxie

How does the average woman stay steady in the face of such career-rocking moments? By keeping the big picture in mind.

Stewart knew the garden and the business were going to be there for her when she got out. While prison could have easily ended her career, Stewart stayed on course, getting back into action as the face and brand of Omnimedia, Inc.

Oprah Winfrey, Nurturing Visionary

Winfrey rewrites the blueprint for business success daily by replacing the model of the cutthroat businessperson with that of the nurturing helper. Winfrey retains creative control of her brand, which is a reminder us not to outsource our vision to others.

While Tyra Banks may aspire to be the next Oprah, Banks lacks the nurturing character of Oprah. Following the Oprah blueprint to multimedia success won’t make Banks the next Oprah without the nurturing and compassion characteristics that defines Oprah’s keys to success.

temperance_brennanThe Three Tools of Career Management

Use the following to manage your career:

  1. Career reinvention
  2. Rock solid determination to achieve goals
  3. Nurturing and compassionate vision

As for me, I don’t want to reinvent myself (I like me). I don’t need to experience jail to see how committed I am to my goals. I’m not interested in being a media mogul.

I want to be like Bones, but without the fiction writing career. Does it matter that I suck at science?
