12 Questions for Career Mindfulness: #12 What if you finally get to do what you always wanted?

What if you finally got what you always wanted? Perhaps the real question is, “What do you want to do?”

I know that I like building things. I like working wherever I want, whenever I want. Even if I had unlimited resources, I’d still be building things. Would I want to create a company with employees? No. I’ve seen a founder go out of business, because of one employee making a fatal mistake. This founder was on the brink of being acquired. He was so close to achieving his ultimate exit strategy. Unfortunately, the founder’s dreams went up in smoke. This threat terrifies me, so I don’t see myself starting a company by employing workers. If it’s my company, then I’m only comfortable hiring contractors, or working with smart friends who have a stake in the business.

What would you do if you got what you always wanted? Is it early retirement? Would you create a company? Would you work with friends or family? Would you start a non-profit, so you could help underserved populations? Would you create scholarship or fellowships for future students, who are like you?

This last question of The 12 Questions for Career Mindfulness series helps you discover your vision, mission, and core values. If we’re not working by our values, we feel angry, unfulfilled, or empty. After reflecting on your work life, I hope you’ll be able to discover what you really want to do, pursuing a work that reflects your mission, vision, and values.
