Smart Lemming Diary: Portfolio Production, Preparing for My Meeting with CEO
June 22, 2005
I’m all set. I woke up early. I created a checklist for my portfolio production, in preparation for my interview with Tom. Working for only three hours, I had to hop in the shower, and then get my haircut. I was able to get at the last minute today, thank goodness.
I was able to process the job circumstances and the interview with my hair stylist, Anthony, who always words of wisdom. I told Anthony that I was surprised that I wasn’t more nervous or stressed about the interview. Funny how as I get older, I’m not as affected by interviews like I used to be. I’m not stressed about preparing and updating my portfolio, tailored to Tom’s Director Marketing position.
Thunder & Lightning
After my cut, I had to get home, so I could finish updating the binders. The weather was horrible, with lightning and thunder. I rushed home as fast as I could with traffic and heavy rain, because I remembered the dog, Angel, was all by herself. She’s terrified of thunder. By the time I got into the house, I couldn’t find her anywhere, until I heard this strange clanging noise coming from the first floor guest bedroom.
Poor thing, Angel was trying to hide behind a tall lamp in the corner of the bedroom. She was flustered, as the tag on her collar was hitting the metal base of the lamp. She was stuck behind the lamp, frantic to get to me. I couldn’t stand seeing her panic like that. She stopped freaking out, after she saw me as she ran to me.
Portfolio Production Checklist
My portfolio process is detailed since I have to:
- Prepare the documentation by creating or updating existing documents
- Buy clear cover notebooks, enough for three sets with four notebooks in each set or a total of 12 notebooks, requiring a full set of color copies for each notebook
- Buy tabs for each notebook and buy Avery clear labels, so I can use on each tab for the documents
- Create binder cover inserts, using PowerPoint to create the portfolio covers.
- Create a table of contents for each binder, listing the categories of content, e.g., product marketing, product management, etc., and then listing the document name in each category that has its on notebook tab
To personalize my portfolio to Tom’s company, I looked at his website, capturing the logo and color palette to tailor my binder covers with these elements. I worked until 6:30 pm, and then went to FedEx/Kinko’s to print color copies for the binders. The first FedEx/Kinko’s printers stopped working, so I had to drive to another one 15 miles away. I finally got home around 9:30 pm. I inspected the binders for accuracy. They look great. It always pays to go with color copies. While my cost of color copies at FedEx Kinkos was $600, it’s worth the cost, since it’s the cornerstone to my personal brand.
Meeting with CEO at 1:30 PM
My meeting with Tom isn’t until 1:30 pm tomorrow, so I have time to keep to my usual schedule in the morning. I’m actually looking forward to meeting with Tom; it doesn’t feel like an interview. I’m also hoping to talk with Amanda before or after my meetings with Tom and his management team for an update.
