Anne Mulcahy’s Lessons Learned
Anne Mulcahy, chairwoman and chief executive of the Xerox Corporation, provides insight into her leadership and management style in her interview with Adam Bryant. In “The Keeper of That Tapping Pen,” Mulcahy highlights her lessons from a Xerox turnaround; qualities she looks for in a job candidate; and the most important leadership lesson she learned.
- Lessons learned from a turnaround at Xerox: “when you have that window of opportunity called a crisis, move as quickly as you can, get as much done as you can…identifying failure quickly.”
- Qualities in a candidate for recruitment: “Adaptability and flexibility. One of the things that is mind-boggling right now is how much we have to change all the time. For anybody who’s into comfort and structure, it gets harder and harder to feel satisfied in the company…I think it’s a lot more fluid right now. It has to be.”
- The most important leadership lesson she learned: “We talk a lot about execution and the importance of it. But I actually think it’s a lot more about followership — that your employees are volunteers and they can choose to wait things out if they don’t believe. And that can be very damaging in a big company. So it is absolutely this essence of creating followership that becomes the most important thing that you can do as a leader.”
Bryant’s interview is a must-read article for anyone who’s is looking CEO wisdom in career management, change management, and leadership.
