The eighth self-management strategy is to unhide the skills you’ve been hiding. What are your hidden skills? Unhide them. List your hidden skills that your boss or coworkers don’t know. Are you a good moderator? Are you adept at organizing and planning things? Are you good with working with customers? Do you love data analysis and tracking metrics? Great, but does your boss or team know?

Unhide Your Skills to your Boss and Team Members
Unhide your skills by applying them to your job function or special assignments. Offer assistance to a team member, using your skills. It builds good will with your team mate. You get experience, and the team is more productive. Volunteer to do random projects for your boss to demonstrate your skills that he/she was once unaware of.

For example, I used to enjoy doing random projects. I was always willing to do more than what was on my plate. I would get one-off projects like a business case analysis for a build/buy decision. This type of experience came in handy because after the project was complete, I always thought in terms of “increased benefits” or “return on investment.”

Refine Your Unhidden Skills, Build More
Continue to refine your skills, building one upon the other. Unhide your skills to your boss and team so you can be a team player, but also build up the list of skills that will make you more marketable when the time comes to change jobs or move up the ladder.
