The 12 Simple Self-Management Strategies: Simple Self-Management Strategy #11 – Know Your Competition

Submitted by Lori Grant on May 26, 2007 – 1:24 pmNo Comment

Head to HeadKnow Your Competitors, Inside and Out
Knowing your company’s competitors is the 11th self-management strategy. When you work for an employer, competitive intelligence is everyone’s job. It’s up to you to always know who your competitors are in the market place. Especially if you’re in customer service, marketing, or sales, you must track what your competitors’ products or service offerings are. You should know how your product or service is positioned against your competitor’s. You should know your product or service’s value propositions and benefits cold.

Identify How Your Company’s Compares
As you compare your product or service to others, identify how your product or service is the same or different and identify which elements (features or functionality) make you and/or your competitor the market leader, market challenger, or market follower. What features or functionalities are “me-too” plays? What would it take for your company to become the leader or challenger? How can you leap frog over the competition?

Communicate Competitor Moves
Once you set up a process to inventory the competitive information, track your competitors on an ongoing basis for any new products or services or enhancements. Send an email to the product or service manager responsible, or email your boss of your findings. In a company, it’s everyone’s job to do competitive intelligence.
